Social media has impacted our communication styles drastically. Here’s a list of some of the modern communication styles/technology that have helped to do this:
- text messaging/instant messaging
- voicemails/audio messages
- headphone microphones
- smart phones
- video chat
- social media sites
‘One of the biggest changes in the way that we interact, due to social media networks, is the sheer number of people that we can interact with.’ (Edwards, 2015) The web gives us the opportunity to connect with so many different people and this is one of the best parts of modern communication. Although it seems like our need for face-to-face communication is constantly going down, you used to need to speak to everyone directly but now we have multiple different platforms that we can instantly message people on.
The problem is that some people are dependent on social media and are now lacking in general communication skills. This is possibly due to the fact that a lot of social media, like twitter, limits the amount of characters you can use. Everything we say now has to be shortened or abbreviated, have we gotten lazy or is this just the most natural way of communicating now?
