It’s difficult to imagine that at one point, not too long ago, we didn’t have social media sites like facebook or twitter. The effect that social media has had on society has been remarkable, in my opinion I see the communication effects as a positive but is this in turn negatively impacting us in our everyday lives?
The good effects social media has had on society include: communication, a huge platform to raise awareness, customer service and advertising. The main negative of social media is that it often gets in the way of people interacting face-to-face and causes people to constantly have their eyes glued to their phone. There’s always something going on online which makes it hard for us to put our technology down.
Social media provides us with a way to communicate with people long distance, it’s generally free of charge as well which is a big step up from the huge phone call bills. It’s also a great place to raise awareness for important issues, there’s many sites dedicated to starting petitions and raising money for those in need. Businesses are also able to communicate with customers more frequently and more efficiently.
Keeping all of this in mind, there’s also the huge issues of cyber bullying and invasion of privacy.
‘Over half (52 percent) off young people report being cyber bullied.’ (“Cyber Bullying Statistics 2014”, 2014) Social media let’s use hide behind our screen and has made people think it’s okay to say whatever they want to other people, this is the ugly side the web.
Not to mention the amount of privacy invasions that have taken place, this happened many times through different apps being connected to peoples accounts. ‘It has been reported several times that certain Facebook apps are leaking identifying information about those who are using them, to advertising and Internet tracking companies. And without the users having a clue!’ (“Privacy violations – the dark side of social media… – BullGuard”, n.d.)
To summarise, the impact on society has been both very positive and very negative, we can only hope the positive impact grows as technology progresses.
